Getting access to HPC

IT Services operates several High Performance Computing (HPC) facilities at the University of Surrey. Which clusters you can access depends on your research group or department affiliation.

Prerequisites

To access a Surrey HPC cluster, you will need the following:

1. A University of Surrey IT account with Linux access

All our clusters run a Linux operating system, it is therefore necessary that your account is Linux enabled.

Important

If you are a member of the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences (FEPS), your account is Linux enabled by default.

Members from other faculties need to request Linux access by submitting a Support Ticket.

2. To meet the access requirements of the HPC facility you want to use

There are several different HPC clusters in operation at Surrey, each with different access requirements. Some clusters may be restricted to specific research groups.

Please refer to HPC clusters to find out which resources you are entitled to access.

3. Authorisation from your supervisor

For access, please first consult with your supervisor or line manager for information regarding which specific cluster’s you can have access to. If you are unable to get this information, submit a request explaining your needs and provide any relevant information, and we will advise you how best to proceed.

Requesting access

Once you meet all 3 prerequisites (you have a Linux account, have confirmed you meet the access requirement for your chosen cluster, and have authorisation from your supervisor), you can submit an access request ticket to IT Services.

Follow the instructions on the Ticket System page and select the Requesting Access Template.

What will happen next?

Your request will be processed and you will be invited to participate in a training session and/or complete a short SurreyLearn course.

When your account is created on the cluster, you will also be added to the relevant clusters’ mailing list, so we can keep you updated on news related to the cluster.
